A standard resting ECG takes about ten seconds and shows your heart rate and rhythm, and can reveal conduction problems and other changes. It is usually the first test a cardiologist uses to investigate palpitations, chest pain or breathlessness.

If your symptoms come and go, an ambulatory monitor worn at home for 24 hours up to two weeks is far more likely to capture them. Dr Kirk will advise which is right for you.
Not at all. A resting ECG simply involves small electrodes placed on your chest, arms and legs, with no needles and nothing that hurts. An ambulatory monitor is a small, lightweight device you wear discreetly under your clothing as you go about your normal day.
If your ECG shows a change that needs a closer look, Dr Kirk explains it clearly and arranges the next step himself. That might be an echocardiogram, further monitoring or another scan, and if treatment is ever needed, your care stays with the same consultant throughout.
